MX TakaTak was launched in July 2020 by MX Player, days after TikTok was banned in India, and it arrived with an advantage most of its competitors lacked. MX Player was already installed on an enormous number of Indian phones as a video player, which gave the new short video app instant distribution.
It grew quickly on that basis, signing creators and building a feed across Indian regional languages in the way its rivals were doing simultaneously. For a period it was among the largest of the apps competing for the audience the ban had displaced.
In 2022 it merged with Moj, ShareChat's short video product, in one of the larger consolidations of that market. Two of the biggest contenders became one, which is the usual shape of these things once the initial scramble settles.
