Moj was built in a hurry. When India banned TikTok in June 2020, tens of millions of creators lost their audience overnight, and ShareChat launched Moj within days to catch them. Something assembled that quickly would normally struggle, but the demand was already there and waiting.
It inherited ShareChat's regional language approach, which suited the audience that the ban had displaced. A great many of the creators who moved across had built followings in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Marathi rather than English, and Moj was designed for exactly that from its first day.
The format is the familiar one: short vertical clips, music, effects, and a feed that decides what you see next. What distinguishes it is how much of Indian short video culture relocated there in a single summer, which makes it a considerably more significant platform than its age alone would suggest.

Why people save Moj video
Status use is the common one. A clip is wanted as a file so it can be set as a WhatsApp status or forwarded to a family group, and neither of those things can be done with a link.
Creators want their own work. Many of the people on Moj lost an entire TikTok following once already, which is a strong argument for keeping copies of what you make rather than trusting any single app to still be there.
And the feed, like every recommendation feed, is built to move forward rather than back. A clip you liked last month is effectively unfindable, whereas a file in a folder is not.
