Xiaohongshu launched in Shanghai in 2013 as a shopping guide, built around Chinese travellers sharing what was worth buying abroad. The name translates roughly as little red book, and in English it is often called RED. What it became is harder to categorise: part social network, part search engine, part shopping platform.
Its defining characteristic is that people use it as a place to look things up. Where to eat, what to buy, how to do something, whether a product is any good — a very large number of users treat it the way others treat a search engine, which is why the content skews towards genuine recommendation rather than performance.
It became briefly famous outside China in January 2025, when a large number of American users joined during uncertainty over TikTok's future, producing an unexpected and short-lived cultural exchange. For most of its life, though, it has been a domestic platform with an enormous and largely female young urban audience.

Why people save Xiaohongshu video
Because the platform is used for reference. A note explaining how to do something, showing a place worth visiting or reviewing a product is the sort of thing people want to keep, and the app is a poor place to store anything for later.
Access from outside China is also inconsistent, and the interface is demanding for anyone who does not read Chinese. A saved file sidesteps both problems.
And creators, of whom there are a great many running small businesses through the platform, need their own material in file form to post anywhere else.
Notes, and what they contain
A Xiaohongshu post is called a note, and it can hold several kinds of media, which affects what there is to save.
| Kind of note | Can it be saved? | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Video note | Yes, where public | The straightforward case |
| Image note | No video to fetch | Many notes are photographs with text |
| Mixed note | The video part | Images and video in one post |
| Private or restricted note | No | Requires an account with access |
| Live shopping stream | No | Running broadcasts have no finished file |
Playback and access from outside mainland China can be intermittent regardless of what you are attempting, so an address that fails once is sometimes worth a second try before you conclude the note has gone.
Xiaohongshu download questions
Is Xiaohongshu the same as RED or Little Red Book?
Yes, all three refer to the same platform. RED is the name it uses internationally.
Do short Xiaohongshu share links work?
Yes, and so do full xiaohongshu.com addresses from a desktop browser.
Why does my note have nothing to download?
It is probably an image note. A great many posts on the platform are photographs with text rather than video.
Can I save a live shopping stream?
No. A running broadcast has no completed file, and these are generally not published afterwards.
Why will the link not load?
Access from outside mainland China is inconsistent. The note may also have been removed.
What quality should I expect on Xiaohongshu?
Vertical video compressed on upload, so a modest file. That is what the platform stores.
Where does the Xiaohongshu file go?
Downloads on Android, the Files app on an iPhone.
Will the person who posted it know on Xiaohongshu?
No. Nothing is reported and no account is used on this side.
Is there a Xiaohongshu limit?
No cap and no queue.
Is it acceptable to save from Xiaohongshu?
Much of the platform is people sharing genuine recommendations, often as small businesses. Keeping a note for your own reference is ordinary; lifting someone's product photography or review video for your own listing is not, and it is noticed.
