VKontakte launched in 2006 as a Russian answer to Facebook, started by Pavel Durov while he was still finishing university. It grew quickly enough to become the dominant social network across Russia and much of the former Soviet Union, and it remains so, with a user base that never migrated to the western platforms.
What distinguishes it technically is how much it does in one place. VK absorbed music, video hosting, file sharing, messaging and communities into a single product far earlier than its western counterparts, so a group there behaves like a forum, a media library and a chat room at once.
That breadth made it an enormous informal archive. Films, television, music and video that is hard to locate anywhere else sits in VK communities, often uploaded years ago by people curating a particular interest. It is also volatile — material is removed over rights claims regularly, and communities are closed without notice.

Why people save VK video
