Vimeo arrived in November 2004, a year ahead of YouTube, started by a group of filmmakers who wanted somewhere to put their own short films. The name is an anagram of movie with an I pushed into it, which tells you how seriously the founders were taking themselves at the time.
It never tried to win on scale, and that turned out to be the point. While other platforms optimised for watch time and advertising, Vimeo kept higher bitrates, refused pre-roll ads, and built tools for people delivering work to clients. The result is a library that skews heavily towards films, documentaries, animation, conference talks and portfolio pieces.
Because the material is often professional, the reasons for wanting a local copy are professional too. Editors need reference. Clients need a file they can watch on a plane. Filmmakers need their own work in a form that does not depend on a subscription they might stop paying for. The picture quality is high enough that a download is genuinely worth having.

Why people save Vimeo video
Work is the main reason. Vimeo is where a great deal of commissioned film is delivered and reviewed, and the people involved need files rather than links: for editing, for offline review, for archiving a finished piece once the project closes.
Quality is the second. Vimeo compresses far less aggressively than platforms funded by advertising, so a download is meaningfully closer to what came out of the edit. For reference footage or anything destined for a large screen, that difference is the whole point.
