TikTok is really two apps that grew together. Musical.ly launched out of Shanghai in 2014 and found an audience of teenagers lip-syncing to fifteen-second clips. Douyin, built by ByteDance, appeared in 2016 and did something similar for the Chinese market but with far better recommendation software underneath it. ByteDance bought Musical.ly in 2017 and folded the two into a single international app in August 2018.
What made it spread was not the editing tools but the For You feed. Every other network at the time showed you things because you had followed someone; TikTok showed you things because the system had worked out you would probably watch them. A first-time poster with no followers could reach a million people by lunchtime. Nothing else worked that way, and it reached a billion users faster than any app before it.
The same machinery is why people download from it. The feed is built to move on, not to help you go back. A clip that taught you something useful is buried under two hundred others within a day, trends burn out in a week, and creators delete old posts constantly as their accounts change direction. Why people save TikTok video
Most of it is about permanence. TikTok is the least stable library of any large platform: creators prune their profiles, accounts get restricted, sounds are pulled for licensing reasons and take every video using them along, and regional blocks can put a clip out of reach overnight. Favouriting something inside the app protects you from none of that.

The watermark, and why it matters
TikTok stamps a moving username and logo onto videos downloaded through the app itself. It is there so a clip reposted somewhere else still points home, which is entirely reasonable — but it also sits on top of the picture and moves around, which makes the file awkward to use for anything else.

Which versions appear depends entirely on what TikTok exposes for that particular video, so a clean copy is not guaranteed every time. If only the stamped version is listed, that is what was available — nothing can strip a watermark cleanly after the fact, and any tool claiming otherwise is blurring part of your picture to do it.

Which TikTok links work?
Both shapes: the short vm.tiktok.com address the Share button copies, and the full tiktok.com/@username/video/ line from a browser. A profile page will not work on its own, since it is not one video.
Does it work with photo posts and slideshows?
Those are put together differently from ordinary video and often cannot be fetched as a single file. Standard video posts are the reliable case.
Can I save the sound on its own?
When TikTok offers a separate audio track it shows up in the list under the video versions.
Will the creator be told I downloaded it?
