SoundCloud was started in Stockholm in 2007 by two musicians who were tired of emailing audio files back and forth for feedback. That origin explains the shape of the site: the waveform running across every track with comments pinned to specific moments is a collaboration tool that happened to become a publishing platform.
It ended up mattering far beyond that. Because anyone could upload without a label, an entire generation of artists built audiences there first, and whole genres took their name from the site. It also became the natural home for things too long or too odd for anywhere else: DJ sets, radio shows, field recordings, podcasts nobody had monetised.
That long tail is precisely what disappears. Tracks get pulled by automated copyright matching, artists clear out old uploads when they sign to a label, accounts lapse when someone stops paying for storage. A mix that has been in somebody's rotation for years can be gone with no warning and no way to ask about it.
Why people save from SoundCloud
The honest answer is impermanence. Nothing on the platform is guaranteed to be there next year, and the material most at risk is exactly the material that exists nowhere else: unofficial remixes, live sets, early uploads by artists who have since moved on.
Listening offline is the other half. A two-hour DJ set is an appalling thing to stream on a commute with patchy signal and a metered data plan, and it is a natural thing to have as a file on a phone.
There is also an ordinary practical case. People who put music on while working, driving or training would rather have a folder that plays than an app that stalls, and artists frequently want copies of their own uploads for a portfolio or a backup that does not depend on anyone else's servers.

What SoundCloud will and will not hand over
SoundCloud gives some tracks away freely and locks others behind its own player, and the difference is set by whoever uploaded the track rather than by us.
Bitrate, and how much it actually matters
A higher bitrate keeps more of the original recording and produces a larger file. The gap between 320 kbps and 128 kbps is genuinely audible on dense music through decent headphones, and genuinely inaudible on a podcast through a phone speaker in a car.
Most people are well served by taking the highest offered for music and the lowest for talk. A one-hour mix at 320 kbps is roughly 140 MB; the same hour of a spoken interview at 128 kbps is nearer 55 MB and sounds no worse for the purpose.
Private tracks, and anything an artist has set to stream-only or put behind a Go+ subscription, stay where they are. Those restrictions were chosen deliberately by the person who made the recording, and working around them is not something this site does.

Can I save any track on the site?
Anything publicly streamable, yes. Private uploads, subscriber-only material and tracks an artist has locked to streaming remain unavailable, because those limits were set on purpose.
What bitrate will I get?
Whatever SoundCloud holds for that upload. Where several encodes exist they are listed with their sizes so you can weigh quality against space.
Can I download a full playlist or set?
Not as one item. A playlist is a list of addresses, so each track has to be pasted separately.
Does it work with podcasts?
Yes. A podcast episode on SoundCloud behaves like any other track, and the lower bitrates are perfectly adequate for speech.
Will the artist know?
No. Nothing is reported to their account, and no account is used on this side.
Does the download count as a play?

Is downloading from SoundCloud allowed?
Where an artist has enabled downloads they are plainly inviting it. Otherwise the recording is theirs, and keeping a personal copy sits in different territory from redistributing or releasing it. Supporting artists whose work you keep returning to is the decent instinct here.
