Reddit and the animated GIF grew up together. For most of the site's history a GIF post was a link to somewhere else — Imgur first, then Gfycat, then a rotating cast of hosts — because Reddit did not carry the files itself and had no intention of paying to.
Gfycat in particular was built for exactly this. It took GIFs, converted them to video, and gave Reddit a way to post looping clips that did not take ten seconds to load. For the better part of a decade a very large share of the site's animation lived there.
It closed in September 2023, and an enormous quantity of Reddit's visual history broke in a single week. Threads going back years now point at nothing. That is the clearest possible argument for saving a clip while the host serving it still exists.

Why old GIF links are broken

Nothing can recover a clip whose host has closed. Where the Internet Archive happened to capture a page it is occasionally worth a look, but embedded media is exactly what web archives capture least reliably.
Why these are worth saving now
The pattern is established rather than hypothetical. Two of the three major hosts Reddit relied on have either closed outright or cleared their archives, both times taking years of threads down with them.
Reddit's own hosting is more durable but not permanent. Posts are deleted by users and moderators constantly, and a clip on v.redd.it goes when its post does.
And a great many of these clips are genuinely useful rather than disposable — short demonstrations of a technique, a repair, a physical process — which is exactly the material that reads better as a loop than as a paragraph.
