Odnoklassniki means classmates, and the premise was narrower than any other social network: find the people you went to school with. In a region where families had been scattered across an enormous territory and then across several new international borders, that turned out to be an unusually powerful offer.
What people did once they found each other was share photographs. Not phone snapshots of lunch, but scans — school class portraits, military service pictures, weddings from the seventies, photographs of towns and factories that no longer exist in the form the picture shows.
