Likee launched in 2017 under the name Like Video, made by the Singapore-based company behind Bigo Live. It arrived into a short video market that TikTok was already reshaping, and competed by leaning hard into effects: face filters, magic transitions and superpower overlays that were more elaborate than what rivals offered at the time.
Its audience settled outside the markets that TikTok dominated most completely, growing strongly across India, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Russia. When India banned a number of Chinese applications in 2020, Likee was caught in that decision, which redrew its footprint again.
What the platform is known for among its users is heavy editing. A clip is frequently built from several effects layered together, and creators who put real work into one naturally want the finished thing as a file rather than as something that only exists inside an app.
Why people save Likee video
Creators want their own edits. A clip assembled from several effects represents real work, and the only way to post it elsewhere or keep it properly is to have the file, ideally without a watermark across it.
The app is also difficult to navigate backwards. Finding a particular clip weeks later is impractical, and a saved file with a name and a folder is a far better arrangement than hoping a feed surfaces it again.
