Josh was launched in 2020 by VerSe Innovation, the Bengaluru company behind the news aggregator Dailyhunt, and like several of its contemporaries it appeared in the space that opened when TikTok was banned in India that June. It arrived with an existing distribution advantage, since Dailyhunt already reached a very large audience across the country.
The approach was regional from the outset, spanning more than a dozen Indian languages, and the company spent heavily on signing established creators rather than waiting for an audience to assemble itself. That produced rapid growth and a feed weighted towards music, comedy, dance and devotional content.
