Giphy launched in 2013 as a search engine for GIFs, which sounds like a joke premise and turned out to be a real business. The animated GIF had been technically obsolete for years, kept alive because it was the one moving format that played everywhere without a plugin, and what was missing was any way to find the right one.
It embedded itself into the places people were typing. Integrations with messaging apps, social platforms and keyboards meant most people used Giphy constantly without visiting the website, which made it strategically valuable. Facebook bought it in 2020, was ordered to sell it by the UK competition regulator, and it went to Shutterstock in 2023.
The technical reality underneath has shifted considerably. Although everything is presented as a GIF, most of what Giphy stores and serves is actually video, because an MP4 of the same animation is a fraction of the size. That is why a downloaded file often is not a .gif at all.

Why download rather than share the link
A file works where an embed does not. Plenty of places accept an uploaded image or video but will not render a Giphy link, and a file avoids the question entirely.
Links also rot. GIFs are removed when uploaders delete them or rights issues arise, and a chat full of Giphy embeds from three years ago is frequently a chat full of empty boxes.
And people building things need the asset. Anyone making a presentation, a video, a sticker pack or a website needs the actual file rather than a pointer at somebody else's server.
GIF, MP4 and why the distinction matters
The word GIF now describes a kind of content rather than a file format, and the gap between the two causes most of the confusion here.

If you specifically need a real .gif — for software that accepts nothing else, or for a platform that will not take video — check that the file you take is actually one. For everything else the MP4 is smaller, sharper and plays perfectly well.

Why did I get an MP4 instead of a GIF?
Because that is usually what Giphy stores. Video is a fraction of the size for the same animation, and most places accept it happily.
Can I get a real .gif file?
Where one exists it is listed alongside the video. Not every item on the site has one any more.

Stickers with transparent backgrounds behave differently from ordinary GIFs, and what you get depends on what formats are stored for that item.
Why are true GIFs so large?
The format dates from 1987 and compresses very poorly by modern standards. An identical animation as MP4 is routinely ten times smaller.

The item may have been removed by its uploader or taken down. Giphy has also changed ownership twice, which has affected some older content.

Saving a reaction GIF to use in a conversation is exactly what the service is for. Bear in mind that many are clips from films and shows, so the underlying footage belongs to somebody even though the GIF is free to grab.
