Douyin launched in September 2016, built by ByteDance in about two hundred days. It is frequently described as the Chinese version of TikTok, which understates the relationship: Douyin came first, and TikTok was built afterwards for markets outside China using the same underlying recommendation engine.
The two have since diverged considerably. Douyin sits inside a far denser commercial ecosystem, where live commerce, in-app purchasing and local services are woven directly into the feed rather than bolted on. A creator there is often running a shop, and the video is the storefront.
For anyone outside China it can be an awkward thing to use. The app is regionally oriented, playback from elsewhere is inconsistent, and content moves through the feed at speed before disappearing. That combination is why people end up saving clips rather than relying on being able to find them again.
Why people save Douyin clips
The feed does not help you go back. Like every recommendation-driven platform, Douyin is built to serve the next thing rather than to let you retrieve the last one, and finding a specific clip a week later is close to impossible.
Creators want their own material. A clip that did well on Douyin is frequently worth posting to TikTok or elsewhere, and a clean copy without a watermark is the only version that is any use for that.
And access from outside China is uneven enough that people who rely on particular creators would rather hold the files than depend on the site loading reliably on any given day.

Douyin and TikTok are not the same service
They share an engine and a parent company but they are separate products with separate content, separate accounts and separate addresses. A link from one will not open in the other.
Which link do you actually have?
Douyin links use douyin.com or the short v.douyin.com form, and the content is oriented towards mainland China. TikTok links use tiktok.com or vm.tiktok.com and belong to the international app.
If you have a TikTok address, the TikTok page handles it properly and will make more sense of the platform's own conventions. Pasting one here will not do anything useful, and the reverse is equally true.
On the watermark itself, the position is the same as on any platform that applies one: where a clean copy exists it is offered, and where it does not, nothing can remove a moving overlay after the fact without damaging the picture underneath.
